MTC

The Master the Code Reading and Spelling Program (MTC©) builds on the mental skills mastered through the PACE© program. This ensures that you have a strong foundation before the teaching of our complex alphabet code begins. The MTC© program is based on research which has found that students must have well-developed auditory processing skills (i.e., ability to identify, take apart, and put back together sounds) before they can effectively learn to read and write. Therefore, the MTC© program sequences the lessons in the following way:

  • First, MTC© works on blending, segmenting, and sound analysis. To teach these skills, nonsense words are used so you do not rely on your memory of known words to ensure decoding skills are being practiced.
  • Next, drill-based encoding (spelling), decoding (reading), and visual memory exercises are used so that the reversibility of the code is made clear and mastery of all skills to an automatic level is accomplished.

It is very important that students master the alphabet code to an automatic level so that they can quickly and easily apply this knowledge when reading or spelling. Students who do not have this mastered will likely spend more of their energy working to read the words on the page rather than using their energy to comprehend the message of the words.
